Young people (under 18s) are very welcome in our pubs and restaurants but, because we sell alcohol, we do have some restrictions on when children can and young people can be in our pubs.
Under the Licensing Act 2003 we have a legal duty to protect children from harm.
How do we do this in Chilled Pubs?
Children (ie. under 16s)
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult (ie. someone over 18) at all times.
Pub/Bar/Garden - children under 16 (accompanied by an adult) are welcome in these areas until 9pm.
Due to licensing requirements, children are not permitted after 9pm, as these areas are considered to be ‘primarily used for the sale of alcohol’ after that time.
Restaurant - children under 16 (accompanied by an adult) are allowed to remain in our restaurants after 9pm as the restaurant is not an area ‘primarily used for the sale of alcohol.’
16 & 17 year olds
Restaurant – young people who are 16 and 17 can eat with us and do not have to have an adult present, as the restaurant is not an area ‘primarily used for the supply of alcohol’ and our tables are fully hosted, but they cannot have any alcohol.
Pub/bar/beer gardens – As these areas are considered to be ‘primarily used for the supply of alcohol’ anyone under 18 (accompanied by an adult) can remain in these areas until 9pm.
No -one under 18 can order or drink any alcohol anywhere in a Chilled Pub– even if it is ordered by an adult and even if it is with a meal.
Under 25s
We operate a Challenge 25 policy which means that anyone who does not look 25 will be required to provide ID to prove that they are 18 or over - if they want to buy or drink alcohol.
The only ID we accept as proof of age in a Chilled Pub is :
- a valid passport or
- a valid driving licence
